Robert Newton Gibson was born on May 19, 1921 in Canton, Mississippi to Alfred Hoyt Gibson, born on June 26, 1885, and Getrude Draper Gibson (1891-1965). His parents met in Alabama, marrying on October 11, 1914 in Fayette, their home at the time. Alfred Gibson later died on September 4, 1961, buried in Canton City Cemetery in Canton, Madison County, Mississippi.

Robert Newton Gibson’s highest level of education was his second year of high school. His family moved to Navco, Mobile, Alabama, in the 1930s. Gibson lived a civil life as a semiskilled general with a woodworking occupation.
He worked at South Gulf Lumber Co. Gibson had four other relatives living in the home with him: Alfred Hoyt Gibson Jr. (1919-1997), Mildred A. Gibson (November 1915-October 1969), Anne Gibson (1922), and Shirley Gibson (1935). Alfred Hoyt Gibson Jr. was also born in Canton, MS and served in the military.
Gibson Jr. was buried in Fletchers Chapel Cemetery in Yazoo County. He married Eunice Gibson. He was a sergeant in the US Army National Guard during World War II with four years of high school behind his life.
Alfred Hoyt Gibson had four siblings, James Madison Works (1872-1951), Barney M. Works (1876-1945), Lema C. Gibson Moore (1880-1976), and D.C. Gibson (1885-1916). Along with Robert Gibson, he also gave birth to Wallace G. Gibson (1926-1927), five years after Robert Gibson.
