A search party was sent out on July 26, 1943 by Lt. Saul C. Weislow. Visibility was high, and the area between and around Savo Islands and Russell Islands was searched, but to no avail. On October 25, 1943, the situation was considered resolved, declaring Gibson as missing in action. There was no information about the plane he was in after takeoff.
